Happy New Years! Today is a nice day across the South, temperatures in the 50s and 60s with sunshine in North MS but more clouds towards the South. Cold air moving on in tomorrow morning
will bring cooler temperatures and rain, and possibly some wet snowflakes in the morning for North MS. It will be quite cold on Friday and Saturday morning. Upper teens are likely up in the North with near 30 degrees towards the Gulf coast with highs only rebounding to the 30s and 40s on Friday - but that is not the frigid start to 2014 I am talking about. Arctic air from Canada will invade the United States and bring lows sub zero temperatures as far south as places like St. Louis and Paducah, KY. On Sunday the 5th, widespread rain is likely, which will probably switch to snow at some point in North MS, but as of now if there are any accumulations it will be light. Frigid temperatures will follow the precipitation and the period from January 6-8 looks to be the coldest since January 2010 - maybe colder, we will see as the cold gets closer. As of now, single digits temperatures look highly possible in North Mississippi, especially in higher elevation, rural areas. More on the upcoming cold soon...
