Very Cold Start to Thanksgiving

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Waking up Thanksgiving morning will be very cold, there will be a hard freeze all the way down to Gulf coast, ending the growing season for the entire state. Many locations will see colder temperatures than they did all last winter! Even though Thanksgiving morning will be colder than Wednesday morning was, temperatures will warm faster and higher in the 40s and 50s, so not bad.

Winter Has Come Early This Year

The title is well said...... a hard freeze all the way down to the Gulf coast and snowflakes in central state, and it's not even Thanksgiving yet!

Clouds are beginning to move out of North MS, but before they clear the whole state, there will and is some precipitation falling tonight, and on the backside some wet snowflakes are possible in Central Mississippi! There wont be any major accumulations to think about, but a light dusting could occur, particulary in the eastern portion of MS. Tomorrow will have abundant sunshine, but still remain cold and well below average, North Mississippi will struggle to rise above freezing! There are also freeze alerts in South Mississippi that are in effect for tomorrow night. Upper teens are possible up north, with mid 20s all the way down to the Gulf coast to start Thanksgiving. Winter Weather to Start the Week

An early season winter event will affect Mississippi as early as tomorrow morning and into Tuesday night. This is a very early in the season for this type of weather! In fact a Winter Weather Advisory has been posted in the Delta due to the likelihood of accumulating sleet tomorrow.

Early tomorrow morning, preciptation should begin moving into parts of the state, falling frozen in the form of sleet, and maybe even a touch of freezing rain. As the day progresses most areas will change over to rain with sleet mixing in at times. Then later in the evening and overnight there is potential for light accumulating snow and/or sleet in North MS. I would not be surprised if an advisory is extended further north later for that situation. The last time Mississippi recieved snow accumulation in November was 2011, and before that it was 1991! So we will see what happens with
 this.

 

 

COLD November

A cold front moved through Mississippi on Friday and now a reinforcing shot has made it even colder. Tonight will be cold to chilly across the whole state, and windy conditions will bring the wind chill down to 10-15 degrees in North Mississippi! Tomorrow won't be much warmer, with some areas not making it out of the 30s. There is also a chance of snow and sleet coming up for Monday and Tuesday, which I will make a post about later..... STAY WARM!

Wednesday

Wedensday will be mild to warm along with some clouds. Though it will be a chilly morning for most, temperatures will rise very quickly.

Stormy Sunday

While we're seeing unseasonably warm temperatures, thunderstorms (severe????) will move in to Mississippi late tonight, lasting into tomorrow. The SPC has North MS under a Slight Risk, so damaging winds are possible, the reason why a Wind Advisory is in effect in North MS, gusts up to 60 mph! Now, there is a CHANCE of an isolated tornado, defintely don't count on one but don't think there can't be one. Storms will move in North MS late tonight/very early morning and showers and storms will be stretch all the way to Gulf Coast by the afternoon.

Another Cold Night

A Freeze Warning is in effect for South and Central Mississippi for tonight, North Mississippi has already seen a freeze. Thanks to the calm winds, tonight will be frostier than last night, ending the growing season for the majority of the state. Although starting off cold, temperatures will rise very quickly after sunrise into the 50s and 60s.

Freezing Cold Tonight

The cold front has passed through the entire state now. There are Hard Freeze Warnings in Northwest Mississippi and Freeze Warnings in South and Central Mississippi. The remainder of North MS has already seen a killing freeze, so no warning. The only place that won't have a freeze is the immediate coast, and even there temperatures will fall to 33-34. Make sure to bring plants and pets indoors!!!! Tomorrow will warm into the 40s and 50s under sunny skies, not too bad. After tomorrow morning, the freeze threat still won't be gone, Thursday morning will have freezing temperatures, but slightly warmer.

Much Cooler Weather Coming!

A strong cold front will sweep though Mississippi tomorrow, bringing a hard freeze for many. A Hard Freeze Watch is in effect for Northwest MS, temperatures of 28 or lower are possible and it will likely be upgraded to a Hard Freeze Warning late tonight or tomorrow morning. A Freeze Warning is in effect for much South and Central MS, meaning all the way to the Gulf Coast! The Freeze Watch you see for Southeast MS will also likely be upgraded to a Freeze Warning at some point. Northeast
MS is not under any warning due to a freeze already occuring earlier in the season. Tomorrow's forecast is somewhat complicated because of the cold front. The cold front will enter MS tomorrow morning and be at the Gulf Coast by the afternoon. On the map shows the AFTERNOON high temperatures (for the 2-4 PM time frame) and in parentheses next to the afternoon high is the expected daily high, which will occur early morning in North MS, maybe around noon or so from Jackson to Hattiesburg. The afternoon high and daily high won't be too far apart on the Gulf Coast. The front will be mostly dry, but some light, scattered precipitation is possible in North Mississippi. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s at the time of precipitation and it looks to be rain BUT I cannot rule out some sleet or ice pellets mixing in near the MS/TN border. There is also a Wind Advisory in effect for North MS. Substained winds of 25 to 39 MPH are expected with gusts up to 57 MPH! This will create cold wind chills: Wednesday afternoon it will feel like it's below freezing!

 

Veteran's Day Forecast

Tomorrow is VETERAN'S DAY! It should be fairly nice with no precipitation, and not too hot or too cold. This will be the last day with warm-ish weather in the northern half of the state due to the arctic air plunging southward, bringing temperatures below freezing for most of the state soon.

ARCTIC Air Coming

A strong cold front will move through early next week, bringing very cold air behind it! Most of Mississippi will dip below freezing on Wednesday and Thursday mornings with many locations having 40s for high temperatures. This will bring temperatures 10-20 degrees below average. Very little precipitation will fall, and when and where it does, it will most likely be rain. The map below shows areas where a hard freeze, a freeze, and frost are possible. This could very well change, so the freezing line could go further north or south.

But for now we are seeing more seasonable temperatures. This is Sunday's forecast:

Rainy Night

North and Central MS have been seeing some rain and cloudy skies today, and will continue into tonight for many areas. The cold front is already beginning to move through Northwest MS and will clear the entire state by morning. Tomorrow will be nice and cool with some leftover showers possible in South MS. Total rainfall won't be heavy (less than an inch in most places.)

Tuesday

Tuesday will be warm and partly cloudy - and wouldn't rule out an isolated shower in the northern half of the state. Highs will be in the 70s for most, slightly above average. Rain chances are going to increase for Wednesday with cooler weather following - highs only in the 50s and 60s.
