Hottest Day of the Year?

Saturday August 31 may be the hottest day of 2013! There will be widespread highs of 95 - 99 degrees resulting in a VERY hot day. Heat indicies will be between 100 - 104 degrees, so make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated if you are outdoors. Sunday should be slightly cooler and high temperatures will fall back to near average next week. Not exactly cool, but better than near 100 degrees!

Friday Highs

This is the hottest week so far this year bringing temperatures to the mid to upper 90's and even close to 100. The hot spot will be in the Greenville and Greenwood area with highs in the upper 90's, but I would not be surprised if a station or two reached 100. Humidity and dewpoints are going to be relatively low, so the heat index should only feel a few degrees warmer than the actual temperature, which should keep most of Mississippi below Heat Advisory criteria (105 degrees). I will update if one is issued later on. A cold front will move through Sunday and into Labor Day bringing much needed cooler temperatures. YES!

Wednesday Forecast - The Heat Begins

Tomorrow will be (unfortunately) hotter than yesterday with highs in the lower to mid 90's which will only increase. The hottest part of the state will be the Delta into Northwest MS with highs 94-96 degrees. On the upside, tonight will be relatively cool in Central and South MS - lows being in the low to mid 60's! The heat will last at least through Sunday with models showing a possible cool down after Labor Day.

Heat Wave This Week

A late summer heat wave will affect North and Central Mississippi this week into Labor Day weekend with highs up to 10 degrees above average. There will be widespread temperatures in the mid to upper 90's late this week and this weekend. It would not be surprising to see a couple cities reach 100. This has been a relatively mild summer, so we've been used to the 80's and 90's -  not near 100 degrees!  The best chance for triple digits is in the Greenville and Greenwood area from Thursday to Saturday.

Here is tomorrow's forecast as temperatures will increase every day.

Today

Today's highs will be slightly below average on the Gulf coast and slightly above average in Central MS today. Scattered showers and storms are likely in South MS.

The Heat and Humidity Are Back!

We've had a nice break from the heat, but of course it's still August and that won't last forever! Today was fairly hot and humid and the heat will continue into tomorrow and through next week. Thunderstorms this evening are likely in Central Mississippi as well as flooding concerns, but chances will shrink the later it gets. Lows tonight will be seasonably warm with near 70 to the north and mid 70's to the Gulf coast. Tomorrow will be near to slightly above average - which would be hot and humid! Temperatures will likely trend even a little warmer, though should be avoiding triple digits at least. It's not far from Labor Day, so maybe we can get a taste of fall soon!

Sunday Weather: Wet and Cool

Better chances of rain will be in Mississippi today, especially in southeast. Highs will be cool compared to average - in the low to mid 80's with mostly cloudy skies in the entire state and wouldn't even rule out a stray thunderstorm or two even in North Mississippi. Predicted rainfall totals I posted from Friday are still a good estimate on rainfall totals. As of right now all Flash Flood Watches and Flood Advisories are in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, but I will update if any are issued.

Rainfall This Weekend and Early Next Week

Tropical moisture will bring heavy rain to the Gulf Coast this weekend and early next week. The heaviest rain will stay in South Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle, but Mississippi won't be totally left out. Southeastern parts of the state could recieve between 1 and 2 inches with locally higher amounts. Rainfall chances and amounts decrease the further north you go. Although, every part of the state has at least a small chance of a thunderstorm in the next few days.

Here is the statewide forecast for Saturday only. Temperatures will still be below average in the North and Central part of the state. Rainfall will reach South Mississippi with scattered storms in Central MS, and an isolated storm or two is possible as far north as Northeast MS.

Tonight and Tomorrow: Unseasonably Cool

A much needed break from the heat has come to North and Central Mississipi bringing temperatures well below average, with the Gulf Coast near to slightly below average. Temperatures will fall into the 50's tonight coming to near record lows tonight in North Mississippi, in fact, some people may even need a light jacket! Highs tomorrow will range from near 80 in North MS to near 90 along the Gulf Coast with a slight chance of showers/storms. Temperatures will then start a warming trend. Thankfully, there is no extreme heat in sight.
